Garden

We've had some great success with our garden so far this year. We had such a nice winter and spring and we started early. Immediately below is the herb garden. My green onions have been the most successful and they are an ingredient I use two to three times per week. Same with the cilantro, but neither keep for long in the fridge. Also growing in there is thyme, which I'm learning to use, oregano, some wimpy chives, rosemary and some basil, just sprouting.

Below are our peas, growing up our trellis. The beans are below it and one row of green and red leaf lettuce. It all has grown so well that everything is crowded now.

This box had two rows of swiss chard growing in the back and then spinach growing in front, flanked by some flat leaf parsley and chili peppers. We also have a small box of mesclun (mixed bitter greens) growing and together with the spinach and lettuce I've made some fabulous salads.

Tomatoes. Who knew they'd do well in a five gallon bucket. Sure cheaper than pots! I planted romas, cherries, yellow pear and I think early girls.

This is one of my beautiful hanging flower arrangements.

Inside the arrangement is a finch's nest, complete with eggs. A fourth one showed up a couple of days later. Last year they tried to build in the outdoor fan/light fixture but we stopped them before they dropped eggs.

I've decided I think I would like to live on a larger piece of property. Adam could work the land, raising our own chickens and turkeys and growing a self sustaining garden. I'd like a goat too. They are so cute. I could just work part-time so I could help. I know it would be a lot of work, but it might be fun too. Plus the kids would learn how to work hard at a young age. Yeah. Put that on my wish list.

Mmmm.... veggies! We stole the tomato in a bucket idea are growing veggies for the first time this year. Just one bucket of big boy tomatoes... I have a notorious black thumb and didn't want to spend tons of money on a bunch of plants I'd just kill. If I do well with the tomato plant this year We'll add more veggies next year. I'll definitely be calling you guys for tips! Enjoy all those yummy salads!

I'm impressed. We can't even plant anything here until AFTER Memorial Day -- it is still too cold and the risk of frost and snow are too high. Sad. I love the container gardening and small little garden plots. Gives me ideas.

Oh, and Eric totally wants to do land & chickens & such someday. Mostly just so the kids can learn about hard work, and raising stuff. But I'm NOT an animal person and can't imagine ever doing that. I can think of other, easier ways to teach them about hard work and being self-sufficient :)

Nice!! I wanted to do some garden boxes to, but we just haven't gotten around to it yet. I think it may be too late for us now. I LOVE cilantro and you are so right about it not keeping for very long in the fridge. I love the smell, if they made a cilantro scented candle I would so be all over that!

We've been talking about wanting to do the same thing. John wants chickens so bad! and I would love some more space and 'wildness' around me. You're garden looks awesome! We haven't even been able to plant yet cause whoever lived in this house before us covered all the dirt that wasn't grass with gravel and it is a beast to get rid of!
